She was born on December 2nd, 1940, in New York City to German Jewish parents. In 1965, she married the British actor and comedian Peter Cook, with whom she had two children; however, they divorced in 1989. She later married the British screenwriter and director Chris Guest, who became the 5th Baron of Haden-Guest in 1996, giving her the title of Baroness.

Haden-Guest has written several books, including "The Debutante’s Ball," a memoir of her coming of age in 1950s New York. She has also worked as a contributing editor for Vanity Fair, and her articles have appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and The Daily Telegraph.
